NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION:
An integral part of La Plata County’s Economy
The southern half of La Plata County falls within the San Juan Basin, for many years one of the most prolific energy production regions in the United States. Although oil has been produced on the New Mexico side of the basin since the 1920s, natural gas production didn’t become a meaningful part of the region’s economy until the 1950s. In La Plata County, CO, the production of natural gas, or methane, from coal began about 25 years ago. Today, the natural gas from La Plata County supplies nearly 2 percent of America’s demand for this fuel to be used for residential and commercial heating, for industrial uses, and for power generation.
For many years, America has sought to reduce the nation’s reliance on imported oil, encourage energy conservation and diversify the mix of domestic energy sources. Natural gas has been identified as a “bridge fuel” to move the country away from “carbon heavy” fuels like coal and to help reduce pollution and greenhouse gases.
In the 21st Century, America’s growing demand for clean natural gas is being met by the energy producers who make up the membership of the La Plata County Energy Council (LPCEC). Members firmly believe energy can be produced safely and responsibly with the highest regard for neighbors and the environment. Members of the LPCEC also bring jobs and sustainable economic development for the entire community through taxes, royalty payments, the purchase of goods and services, salaries and benefits, and community involvement.
